MALE MIDLIFE CRISIS
Technically we know that men cannot go through a literal menopause. However, for many men the phase of midlife brings significant hormonal changes and important physical and psychological changes. Put these all together in a melting pot and you may very well have the ingredients for a male midlife crisis. This is undoubtedly one of the reasons why divorce rates soar at this time and many women get the shock of their lives. These women are left in the well known empty nest syndrome with hubby fleeing the familiar domestic scene. Conversely, the male not infrequently gets the "nesting syndrome" and spreads his wings with a younger woman finding that her youthfulness rekindles his feelings of manliness and passion and he feels that life is beginning all over again.
This situation is very emotive and can be extremely traumatic in the short and long term. It could probably be averted in many cases if males received more information and supportive counselling especially with their wives at, this time in their lives. In some cases, the timely use of testosterone replacement therapy, even if only on a temporary basis, can bring back the sparkle into a long-term sexual relationship.
If older men keep running off with younger women, what will the women they leave behind do? Well, one obvious strategy is that these women can also get the "nesting syndrome" and run off with younger men! I see quite a few older women doing this and find it an interesting sociological phenomenon. Anyway, there are statistics to support such behaviour, as menopausal women who take natural oestrogen have been found, on average, to live nine to ten years longer than their male counterparts. Тo avoid loneliness in old age a man ten years younger could probably fit the bill very nicely!
