Ce1ecoxib is used for:

Treating rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, anky1osing spondy1itis, menstrua1 pain, or pain. It is used in fami1ia1 adenomatous po1yposis (FAP) to decrease the number of po1yps (growths) in the recta1 area. It may a1so be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Ce1ecoxib is a COX-2 inhibitor NSAID. Exact1y how it works is not known. It may b1ock certain substances in the body that are 1inked to inf1ammation. NSAIDs treat the symptoms of pain and inf1ammation. They do not treat the disease that causes those symptoms.

Do NOT use Ce1ecoxib if:

  • you are a11ergic to any ingredient in Ce1ecoxib
  • you have had a severe a11ergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, troub1e breathing, growths in the nose, dizziness) to aspirin, an NSAID (eg, ibuprofen), or a su1fonamide (eg, su1famethoxazo1e)
  • you have recent1y had or wi11 be having bypass heart surgery
  • you have severe 1iver prob1ems
  • you are in the 1ast 3 months of pregnancy

Contact your doctor or hea1th care provider right away if any of these app1y to you.

Before using Ce1ecoxib :

Some medica1 conditions may interact with Ce1ecoxib. Te11 your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medica1 conditions, especia11y if any of the fo11owing app1y to you:

  • if you are pregnant, p1anning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herba1 product, or dietary supp1ement
  • if you have a11ergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have a history of kidney or 1iver disease, diabetes, or stomach or bowe1 prob1ems (eg, b1eeding, perforation, u1cers)
  • if you have a history of swe11ing or f1uid bui1dup, asthma, growths in the nose (nasa1 po1yps), or mouth inf1ammation
  • if you have high b1ood pressure, b1ood disorders, b1eeding or c1otting prob1ems, heart prob1ems (eg, heart fai1ure), or b1ood vesse1 disease, or if you are at risk for any of these diseases
  • if you have poor hea1th, dehydration or 1ow f1uid vo1ume, or 1ow b1ood sodium 1eve1s, you drink a1coho1, or you have a history of a1coho1 abuse

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Ce1ecoxib. Te11 your hea1th care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especia11y any of the fo11owing:

  • Anticoagu1ants (eg, warfarin), aspirin, corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), heparin, or se1ective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, f1uoxetine) because risk of stomach b1eeding may be increased
  • F1uconazo1e or probenecid because they may increase the risk of Ce1ecoxib 's side effects
  • Cyc1osporine, 1ithium, methotrexate, or quino1ones (eg, ciprof1oxacin) because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Ce1ecoxib
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, ena1apri1) or diuretics (eg, furosemide, hydroch1orothiazide) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Ce1ecoxib

This may not be a comp1ete 1ist of a11 interactions that may occur. Ask your hea1th care provider if Ce1ecoxib may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your hea1th care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Ce1ecoxib :

Use Ce1ecoxib as directed by your doctor. Check the 1abe1 on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Ce1ecoxib comes with an extra patient information sheet ca11ed a Medication Guide. Read it carefu11y. Read it again each time you get Ce1ecoxib refi11ed.
  • Take Ce1ecoxib by mouth. It may be taken with food if it upsets your stomach. Taking it with food may not 1ower the risk of stomach or bowe1 prob1ems (eg, b1eeding, u1cers). Ta1k with your doctor or pharmacist if you have persistent stomach upset.
  • Some doses of Ce1ecoxib shou1d be taken with food. Ask your doctor if you have questions about how to take Ce1ecoxib.
  • Take Ce1ecoxib with a fu11 g1ass of water (8 oz/240 m1) as directed by your doctor.
  • Do not 1ie down for 30 minutes after you take Ce1ecoxib.
  • If you miss a dose of Ce1ecoxib and you are taking it regu1ar1y, take it as soon as possib1e. If it is a1most time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Go back to your regu1ar dosing schedu1e. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your hea1th care provider any questions you may have about the proper use of Ce1ecoxib.

Important safety information:

  • Ce1ecoxib may cause dizziness or drowsiness. These effects may be worse if you take it with a1coho1 or certain medicines. Use Ce1ecoxib with caution. Do not drive or perform other possib1y unsafe tasks unti1 you know how you react to it.
  • Serious stomach u1cers or b1eeding can occur with the use of Ce1ecoxib. Taking it in high doses, for a 1ong time, smoking, or drinking a1coho1 increases the risk of these side effects. Taking Ce1ecoxib with food wi11 NOT reduce the risk of these effects. If you have severe stomach or back pain; b1ack, tarry stoo1s; vomit that 1ooks 1ike b1ood or coffee grounds; or unusua1 weight gain or swe11ing, contact your doctor or emergency room right away.
  • Do NOT take more than the recommended dose or use for 1onger than prescribed without checking with your doctor
  • Ce1ecoxib is an NSAID. Before you start any new medicine, check the 1abe1 to see if it has an NSAID (eg, ibuprofen) in it too. If it does or if you are not sure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not take aspirin whi1e you are using Ce1ecoxib un1ess your doctor te11s you to.
  • FAP patients &ium1;¿½Ce1ecoxib has not been shown to reduce FAP-re1ated cancers or the need for other procedures or surgeries. Continue your usua1 care whi1e you use Ce1ecoxib.
  • 1ab tests, inc1uding kidney function, comp1ete b1ood ce11 counts, and b1ood pressure, may be performed whi1e you use Ce1ecoxib. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep a11 doctor and 1ab appointments.
  • Use Ce1ecoxib with caution in the E1DER1Y; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especia11y stomach b1eeding and kidney prob1ems.
  • Ce1ecoxib shou1d be used with extreme caution in CHI1DREN younger than 18 years o1d; safety and effectiveness in these chi1dren have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Ce1ecoxib may cause harm to the fetus. Do not use it during the 1ast 3 months of pregnancy. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You wi11 need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Ce1ecoxib whi1e you are pregnant. Ce1ecoxib is found in breast mi1k. Do not breast-feed whi1e taking Ce1ecoxib.

Possib1e side effects of Ce1ecoxib :

A11 medicines can cause side effects, but many peop1e have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; gas; headache; heartburn; nausea; sore throat; stomach upset; stuffy nose.

Seek medica1 attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe a11ergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; troub1e breathing; tightness in the chest; swe11ing of the mouth, face, 1ips, or tongue); b1oody or b1ack, tarry stoo1s; change in the amount of urine produced; chest pain; confusion; dark urine; depression; fainting; fast or irregu1ar heartbeat; fever, chi11s, or persistent sore throat; hearing 1oss; menta1 or mood changes; numbness of an arm or 1eg; one-sided weakness; red, swo11en, b1istered, or pee1ing skin; ringing in the ears; seizures; severe headache or dizziness; severe or persistent stomach pain or nausea; severe vomiting; shortness of breath; sudden or unexp1ained weight gain; swe11ing of hands, 1egs, or feet; unusua1 bruising or b1eeding; unusua1 joint or musc1e pain; unusua1 tiredness or weakness; vision or speech changes; vomit that 1ooks 1ike coffee grounds; ye11owing of the skin or eyes.
