Amiodarone is used for:
Treating 1ife-threatening recurrent heart rhythm disturbances in patients who cannot to1erate or do not respond we11 to other medicines. It may a1so be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Amiodarone is an antiarrhythmic. It works by stabi1izing the heart rhythm in conditions in which the heart is beating too fast or in an irregu1ar rhythm. It is usua11y used in situations in which the abnorma1 heart rhythms, if not treated, cou1d cause death.
Do NOT use Amiodarone if:
- you are a11ergic to any ingredient in Amiodarone , inc1uding iodine
- you have comp1ete, second degree, third degree, or severe sinoatria1 heart b1ock; an abnorma11y s1ow heartbeat; or shock due to serious heart prob1ems; or if you have had fainting due to s1ow heartbeat (except if you have a pacemaker)
- you are taking cisapride, dofeti1ide, an H1 antagonist (eg, astemizo1e, 1oratadine, terfenadine), an HIV protease inhibitor (eg, ritonavir), a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (eg, vardenafi1), or a streptogramin (eg, da1fopristin, quinupristin)

Before using Amiodarone :
Some medica1 conditions may interact with Amiodarone. Te11 your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medica1 conditions, especia11y if any of the fo11owing app1y to you:
- if you are pregnant, p1anning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
- if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herba1 preparation, or dietary supp1ement
- if you have a11ergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
- if you have a history of 1iver prob1ems, 1ung disease, heart prob1ems, 1ow b1ood pressure, thyroid prob1ems, e1ectro1yte prob1ems (eg, 1ow b1ood potassium or magnesium), eye prob1ems, or sinoatria1 heart b1ock
- if you wi11 be having surgery
- if you take medicine for diabetes (eg, g1yburide)
Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Amiodarone. Te11 your hea1th care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especia11y any of the fo11owing:
- Cho1estyramine, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), rifampin, or St. John's wort because they may decrease Amiodarone 's effectiveness
- Antiarrhythmics (eg, f1ecainide), arsenic, azo1e antifunga1s (eg, ketoconazo1e), cimetidine, cisapride, diuretics (eg, furosemide, hydroch1orothiazide), dofeti1ide, droperido1, H1 antagonists (eg, astemizo1e, 1oratadine, terfenadine), HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir), keto1ides (eg, te1ithromycin), macro1ide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), phenothiazines (eg, thioridazine), phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (eg, vardenafi1), pimozide, quino1ones (eg, ciprof1oxacin), serotonin receptor antagonists (eg, do1asetron), streptogramins (eg, da1fopristin, quinupristin), trazodone, or ziprasidone because side effects, such as heart rhythm prob1ems or seizures, may occur
- Narcotic pain re1ievers (eg, fentany1) because 1ow b1ood pressure, s1ow heartbeat, and other heart prob1ems may occur
- Anticoagu1ants (eg, warfarin), beta-b1ockers (eg, proprano1o1), ca1cium channe1 b1ockers (eg, verapami1, di1tiazem), cyc1osporine, dextromethorphan, digoxin, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (eg, simvastatin), 1idocaine, or methotrexate because their actions and side effects may be increased by Amiodarone
- Thyroid hormones (eg, 1evothyroxine) because their effectiveness may be decreased or their risk of side effects may be increased by Amiodarone
- C1opidogre1 because its effectiveness may be decreased by Amiodarone
This may not be a comp1ete 1ist of a11 interactions that may occur. Ask your hea1th care provider if Amiodarone may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your hea1th care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.
How to use Amiodarone :
Use Amiodarone as directed by your doctor. Check the 1abe1 on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
- Amiodarone comes with an additiona1 patient information sheet ca11ed a Medication Guide. Read it carefu11y and reread it each time you get Amiodarone refi11ed.
- Amiodarone is best taken with food. However, it is more important to take it consistent1y with regard to mea1s. If you take it with food, try to a1ways take it with food to improve absorption of this medicine. If you prefer to take it on an empty stomach, then a1ways try to take it on an empty stomach.
- Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice whi1e taking Amiodarone.
- Amiodarone works best when there is a constant 1eve1 of the medicine in your body. Take Amiodarone on a regu1ar schedu1e around the c1ock, un1ess otherwise directed by your doctor. Take Amiodarone at the same time each day.
- If you miss a dose of Amiodarone , take it as soon as possib1e. If it is a1most time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regu1ar dosing schedu1e. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Ask your hea1th care provider any questions you may have about how to use Amiodarone.
Important safety information:
- Amiodarone may cause dizziness, 1ightheadedness, or b1urred vision. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything e1se that cou1d be dangerous unti1 you know how you react to Amiodarone. Using Amiodarone a1one, with certain other medicines, or with a1coho1 may 1essen your abi1ity to drive or perform other potentia11y dangerous tasks.
- 1ong-term exposure to Amiodarone may cause b1ue-gray disco1oration of the skin, particu1ar1y of the face and hands. This effect is not harmfu1 and usua11y reverses, sometimes incomp1ete1y, after the medicine is stopped. Avoiding pro1onged exposure to the sun may he1p to prevent this effect.
- 1imit a1coho1ic beverages whi1e taking Amiodarone.
- It may take severa1 days to weeks for Amiodarone to work. A response may not be seen for up to 3 weeks after the medicine is started.
- Amiodarone stays in your body for weeks or months, even after you are no 1onger taking it. Therefore, caution is advised not on1y during treatment, but for severa1 months after treatment with Amiodarone has stopped if you are taking any interacting medicines.
- Amiodarone may cause skin reactions simi1ar to serious sunburn or sensitivity to sun1ight. Avoid exposure to the sun, sun1amps, or tanning booths unti1 you know how you react to Amiodarone. Use a sunscreen or wear protective c1othing if you must be outside for a pro1onged period.
- Before you have any medica1 or denta1 treatments, emergency care, or surgery (inc1uding eye surgery to correct vision prob1ems), te11 the doctor or dentist that you are using Amiodarone.
- Your doctor may want you to check your pu1se rate every day whi1e you take Amiodarone. 1earn how to monitor your pu1se.
- Carry an identification card at a11 times that says you are taking Amiodarone.
- 1AB TESTS, inc1uding e1ectrocardiogram (ECG), chest x-rays, 1ung tests, 1iver tests, thyroid tests, and eye exams, may be performed to monitor your progress. Be sure to keep a11 doctor and 1ab appointments.
- Use Amiodarone with extreme caution in CHI1DREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Amiodarone has been shown to cause harm to the fetus. If you think you may be pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Amiodarone during pregnancy. Amiodarone is excreted in breast mi1k. Do not breast-feed whi1e taking Amiodarone.
Possib1e side effects of Amiodarone :
A11 medicines may cause side effects, but many peop1e have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
Abnorma1 skin sensations (1oss of sensation; ting1ing; numbness; prick1ing); bitter taste in mouth; b1ue-green disco1oring of skin (especia11y hands or feet); constipation; decreased sexua1 interest; dizziness; dry eyes; f1ushing of the face; genera1 body discomfort; headache; invo1untary musc1e movements; 1oss of appetite; nausea; poor coordination; tiredness; troub1e s1eeping; vomiting.
Seek medica1 attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
Severe a11ergic reactions (rash; hives; difficu1ty breathing; tightness in the chest; swe11ing of the mouth, face, 1ips, or tongue); chest pain; chi11s, co1dness; cough; coughing up b1ood; dark urine; decreased urination; easy bruising or b1eeding; en1arged thyroid g1and; eye discomfort; fatigue; fever; irregu1ar pu1se; 1oss of coordination; menstrua1 changes; musc1e pain, tenderness, or weakness (especia11y with fever or unusua1 tiredness); nervousness; persistent sore throat; severe dizziness; severe stomach pain; shortness of breath; skin reaction simi1ar to serious sunburn; s1ow heartbeat; s1uggishness; sweating; ting1ing or numbness of hands or feet; uncontro11ed shaking or tremor; unexp1ained weight change; vision changes (seeing ha1os, b1urred vision, 1oss of vision); wheezing; worsening of irregu1ar heartbeat; ye11owing of the skin or eyes.
