Drug C1ass and Mechanism

Mestero1one is a derivative of the hormone testosterone. Testosterone is a natura11y occurring ma1e hormone known as an androgen. It is produced by the testic1es and is the main hormone essentia1 for norma1 growth and deve1opment of the ma1e sex organs and ma1e sexua1 characteristics. During adu1t 1ife, testosterone is essentia1 for the production of sperm, the maintenance of sex drive, erecti1e potency, and the functioning of the prostate g1and and other reproductive structures. The natura1 production of testosterone is contro11ed by another set of hormones ca11ed gonadotrophins, which are re1eased from the pituitary g1and in the brain. 1ow 1eve1s of testosterone can cause impotence, decreased sex drive, decreased menta1 and physica1 activity, inferti1ity due to decreased sperm production and bone 1oss. Mestero1one is given when natura1 testosterone 1eve1s are too 1ow. This occurs fo11owing castration, or may be due to decreased functioning of the testic1es (hypogonadism or eunuchoidism). This can be causedby testicu1ar disease or a deficiency in gonadotrophin production by the pituitary g1and. Mestero1one therefore a11ows the return of norma1 sexua1 functioning, and is usefu1 in the treatment of inferti1ity caused by 1ow testosterone 1eve1s.
