Nature and use of the drug
Sildenafil citrate is a drug that is use to treat erectile dysfunction in men. The pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, is selling it under the name Viagra. The scientists at Pfizer originally formulated Viagra to treat certain cardiovascular system problems such as hypertension and angina pectoris. Testing of the drug for the original purpose turned to be futile. They are of insignificant help to the problems they were intended for. During the testing for its effect on angina pectoris cases it had been noted that Viagra could cause penile erection. Further experiments were performed until the drug gained FDA approval as treatment of erectile dysfunction. Pfizer stared marketing the product for treating erectile dysfunction later in the year 1998. The FDA approved Viagra to be the first prescription medicine for treating erectile dysfunction in tablet form. Later, Viagra had been noted to help patients suffering from a rare disease called pulmonary hypertension. It was also recorded to lower the frequency of Raynaud's phenomenon attack. It was also noted that the duration of each attack had been reduced into half.
How this medicine works
Viagra works by inhibiting the phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). This PDE5 is responsible for lowering the amount of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)in the muscles of the penile area. If PDE5 is inhibited, there will be enough cGMP in the muscles of the penile area. Enough cGMP will cause these muscles to relax and the inflow of blood will increase. This now will cause an erection. The effect of Viagra in the wilting of plants was also noted and widely used. It has been used to effectively prolong the freshness of cut flowers. A small portion of Viagra is dissolved into the water where the stems of the cut flowers are soaked. Experiments were performed and it was recorded that flowers stayed fresh for twice the length of time that it would without the help of Viagra.
Dosage and administration
Viagra pills are available in 25, 50 and 100 mg tablets. It is recommended that a user starts with a 50mg tablet and then increase or decrease the dosage depending on how the pill reacted to the person. Viagra should be taken in between 4 hours to 30 minutes before the sexual activity. It takes effect in as fast as 30 minutes. This is the only drug for treating erectile dysfunction that was known to cause multiple erections. But it is also the one with the shortest effect of only up to 4 hours. Viagra should be taken only once per day.
