What About My Libido, Doc?
The difference between male menopause and mid-life crisis
The symptoms of male menopause and mid-life crisis appear to be quite similar, but they are very different. The following check list of questions will help pinpoint mid-life crisis more clearly.
Mid-life crisis is more commonly associated with an incident or a significant change in life events. The following questions mostly focus on the most common causes of this "crisis".
• Have you had a death of a parent, family member, or close friend recently?
• Has there been a change in your working situation such as dissatisfaction with work, loss or change of jobs?
• Is your relationship at home different? Have you become dissatisfied with your partner, or undergone a divorce?
Answering "yes" to these questions would likely point to midlife crisis. The difference between mid-life crisis and male menopause is that there is usually an extraneous life event or activity causing mid-life crisis, whereas an ever decreasing level of testosterone causes male menopause. The following questions help distinguish between the two conditions:
• Do you drink heavily? (Yes)
• Do you use tranquillisers regularly? (Yes)
• Are you confident about your role in life? (No)
• Do you focus a lot about thoughts on making life changes? (Yes)
• Do you think much about dying? (Yes)
These answers would point to mid-life crisis. Men who suffer with mid-life crisis are not short of energy. If anything, there may even be an increase in activity, both physically and mentally, in order to try and deal with these problems. The following questions may also help differentiate the two conditions.
• Do you dream a lot during the day and at night? (Yes)
• How is your physical and mental energy and your level of creativity? (
Low)
• How is your sex drive and your erectile function? (Low)
These answers would point more towards male menopause. The last two questions have the greatest impact in diagnosing between the two conditions. With male menopause, the patient is very unlikely to be energetic and have a thriving sex life.
